Policy Workshop in Leipzig, Germany, 25 March 2025 – Hybrid Event

A pivotal policy workshop convened in DBFZ facilities, in Leipzig on March 25, 2025, under the GreenMeUp project, focusing on accelerating the biomethane market’s expansion. The event, “From Policy to Action: Driving Biomethane Market Growth” brought together key stakeholders to address the current state, challenges, and future opportunities within the European biomethane sector.

Discussions centered on the critical role of biomethane in achieving the EU’s ambitious decarbonization goals, particularly within the context of the REPowerEU plan. Key themes included the necessity for robust policy frameworks, optimized support mechanisms, and streamlined authorization processes.

Participants explored the current state of biomethane production across Europe, highlighting leading countries and identifying areas for growth in emerging markets. The importance of diversifying feedstock sources, including agricultural residues, industrial waste, and organic municipal solid waste, was emphasized. Technological advancements in biogas upgrading, such as membrane separation, and the facilitation of grid injection were also key points of discussion.

A significant portion of the workshop addressed the need for effective policy instruments to stimulate market uptake. This included discussions on financial support mechanisms like feed-in tariffs and incentives for demand, as well as non-financial measures such as policy synchronization and efficient authorization procedures.

The vital role of digestate management and innovative biomass production systems, such as sequential cropping, was underscored as a means to enhance sustainability and circular economy principles. The workshop also highlighted the necessity for increased public awareness and the integration of environmental benefits into fuel pricing.

The event stressed that a tailored mix of financial and non-financial incentives is crucial to optimize public investments and increase biomethane utilization. Furthermore, the importance of collaboration between research, industry, and policymakers was highlighted, to translate policy into practical action.

In conclusion, the workshop served as a crucial platform for advancing the biomethane agenda, emphasizing the need for strategic policies and collaborative efforts to unlock the sector’s full potential and contribute to the EU’s climate and energy objectives.
